Bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland

Switzerland officially recognized the Kyrgyz Republic on 23 December 1991. Diplomatic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland established on 14 February 1992.

Since 1992, Kyrgyzstan joined Switzerland’s voting group for the Bretton Woods institutions. Switzerland supports Kyrgyzstan as part of its development cooperation programme funded by SDC and SECO. Cooperation is taking place in five areas, namely: basic Infrastructure, water management, health, public institutions and services, and private sector development.

The strong Swiss presence in Kyrgyzstan via the bilateral aid programme and geographic similarities with potential for tourism and agro-processing provides opportunities for Swiss investors.

There are 21 bilateral agreements to date between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland covering various issues of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The Agreement to avoid double taxation signed 26.01.2011 was ratified in 2002. Switzerland and Kyrgyzstan have also ratified a bilateral agreement on the mutual protection of investments in 2003.
